The traditional design and construction of Petrochemical, Chemical & Refining facilities requires the use of bolted joints as opposed to welded connections.  Some of these bolted joints are very high temperature and require special products to be used within the bolted joint connection for sealing.  Many of the bolted joint connections within these facilities must be disassembled and reassembled as part of regular maintenance, and are expected to maintain a positive seal for the life of the bolted joint connection.  Consequently, the design and manufacture of the fluid sealing products employed for various types of bolted connections are trusted to produce the same life and integrity as a welded connection.

There are several factors taken into account when selecting the proper gasket material to be used in a particular bolted connection and in most cases there are many different gasket material options.  However, this is not the case when dealing with high temperature applications.  Because of the critical nature of high temp sealing the right choice has to be made.  Making the right choice is not always easy and the numbers of options are limited.

This presentation describes products, as well as the practices implemented for high temp flange assemblies required for maintenance and new construction activities.
